Please contact our office if you have any of the following medical conditions in order to obtain preoperative/anesthesia instructions:

  • Serious health problems
  • Dialysis
  • Artificial hip or knee joint
  • Heart murmur
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Artificial heart valve
  • Diabetes
  • Latex allergy
  • Take blood thinners
  • Recent use of diet pills
  • * Bisphosphnate (Fosamax, Boniva, Reclast, Alendranote, Zoledronic Acid)

Local anesthesia – “Numbing” the area to be treated with injection of medication.

It is not necessary to change your eating habits before your appointment.

Please take any prescription medications as you normally would unless otherwise directed by the doctor.

Nitrous oxide “laughing gas” and local anesthesia - Nitrous oxide gas is administered to produce a relaxed, awake state. Numbing injections are then given in the appropriate area(s) in addition to the gas.

It is not necessary to change your eating habits before your appointment unless instructed otherwise by the Doctor.

Intravenous anesthesia - Intravenous (IV) medications are given to produce a semiconscious or unconscious condition. You will have either a nasal mask or cannula along with your IV. The numbing injections in surgery are accomplished while you sleep.

Nothing to eat or drink for at least six hours preoperatively (food or drink). You should take any prescription medications as you normally would with a small sip of water, unless you have one of the health conditions listed above. Should you have one of the conditions listed above, our office will advise medication administration prior to your arrival.

You must have a responsible adult with you before, during, and after the procedure to drive you home and watch after you for the remainder of the day. This responsible adult will be required to remain at our office during the procedure and will need to remain with you at home for the 24 hour recovery period to assist in the patients' recovery. The post-operative instructions will be given to the escort and questions will be discussed in the recovery portion of the appointment.

You should wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing. Remove all of your jewelry and nail polish before the appointment. If you wear contact lenses, please remove them and wear your eyeglasses instead.

No smoking at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery. It is also advised to not smoke during the postoperative period, which may continue for a week or so.

If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, stomach or bowel upset, please notify the office prior to your appointment.

Intramuscular injection (children ages 2-6 only):

This type of anesthetic requires the child to have nothing to eat or drink for six hours prior to the appointment. We will make every attempt to have the appointment first thing in the morning to assist in this requirement. If this requirement is not possible, please schedule a consultation appointment to discuss the preparation with Dr. Tate.

If the child has an illness such as a cold, sore throat, stomach or bowel upset, please notify the office prior to your appointment.

The child should wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing.
